Corbusier’s Ville Verte as system: a perspective from the park

The theme of this dissertation is the Ville Verte – the model of “park-city” that Corbusier imagined in 1930 for the residential sector of the Ville Radieuse (Radiant City). To analyze it we will consider: first, its antecedents (within the work of the architect, and within his studies, namely on Hénard); then, the process of work that led to the consolidation of the model; and, finally, its systemic nature. We will argue that Ville Verte, more than a project, is the system of a project. The perspective we propose on the Ville Verte, as the result of a documental analysis carried out at the Fondation Le Corbusier, marks the importance given to the park as structuring element of the city. We will argue that, more than a “green background”, the park is a support that organizes and complements the several constituents of the city, in an effective relation of interdependence.
